Hotel Wuppertal

What actually, is so lovable about this city? First, of course, its world-renowned suspension railway, which like a dragon, hard as steel, with several stations for heads and flashing eyes, twists and turns above the river, as the writer Else Lasker-Schüler, the city`s most famous daughter, describes it. It must be said, however, that for the people of Wuppertal it was not a case of love at first sight as far as the “Schwebebahn” is concerned. Indignant residents raised a hue and cry when at the turn of the century the neighbouring towns of Barmen and Elberfeld, both rich in tradition, but only much later(in 1929) destined to amalgamate with other neighbouring communities to form the city Wuppertal, gave the green light for work to begin on the millipede. Despite all the protests, the suspension railway very soon proved to be a favourite with the people of Wuppertal and became tourist attraction number one. What is particularly attractive about this “city in the country”, with 360,000 inhabitants, is its topographical location. Surrounded by wooded hills it nestles in the narrow valley of the Wupper, whose banks were at one time bordered by bleaching greens, and the city boundaries melt into the hilly fields and extensive woods of the Graf Berg region (Bergisches Land). From any part of the city it is only a ten- minute walk to the nearest park or shady woodland path. Two thirds of the total municipal area is green belt: woods, meadows, gardens and fields. The network of walks for ramblers in Wuppertal stretches for 400 kilometers. The “round the city boundaries” walk, which has been in existence for over 60 years, is 109 km long on its own. A favourite day- trippers` rendezvous for the people of Wuppertal as well as for visitors from near and far is the zoo - one of the most scenically attractive in the world. It has over 5,000 animals and birds from all parts of the globe. Wuppertal, a mixture of outgoing metropolis and cosy village richly adorned with stucco facades and handsome half- timbered houses, offers interesting surprises: a total of 8,723 municipal steps have to be climbed to get from the lowest point to the highest, for Wuppertal lies at an altitude of between 100 and 350 meters above sea level. However, interesting insights and views make up for the strain of climbing so many steps. It is only a few strides from the narrow, steep steps to the extensive shopping precincts. Wuppertal` s pedestrian zone is ideal for an non-stop shopping spree, with supermarkets, shops, boutiques to suit every taste. Anyone feeling in need of replenishment afterwards should not miss out on the legendary regional afternoon coffee spread (Bergische Kaffeetafel), “coffee and all that goes with it”, as the locals say. You will find it on the menu of fashionable gourmet restaurants as well as on the bill of fare of quaint and cosy pubs, which can be found on every corner. Wuppertal has been a university town since 1972. 17,000 young people from 80 different countries are distributed over 14 faculties. What other university can boast such a broad perspective? From the university precincts there is a marvelous view to the city. Both university pub and library are open to the general public: no one is barred from quenching their thirst for knowledge and everyone is welcome. The technical academy in Wuppertal with 26,000 students is one of the most important educational establishments in the Federal Republic. Cultural tastes are catered for in a variety of ways. The tripartite theatre, consisting of opera house, playhouse and Pina Bausch`s modern dance theatre, has made a name for the city far beyond its own boundaries. The municipal symphony orchestra, the boy`s choir (Kantorei Barmen Gemarke) are household names to anyone interested in classical music. Following extensive restoration, the city` s concert hall (Stadthalle) on the Johannisberg counts among the most beautiful and acoustically excellent concert halls in Europe. An eldorado for art lovers is the well known “Von der Heydt- Museum” with masterpieces by 19th and 20th century artists. The first Picasso ever to appear in public went on display here. Today the museum houses one of the most important art collections of paintings and other works of art in Federal Republic. Those interested in science should visit the “Fuhlrott- Museum”, named after J.C. Fuhlrott, discoverer of Neanderthal man. In Wuppertal`s clock museum time seems to fly. Here you can see and hear how man has tried for 5,000 years to cope with time. Part of the History Centre is the house were Engels was born (Engelshaus), architecturally typical of the region and in which there is a permanent display of materials associated with Friedrich Engels and other famous citizens of Wuppertal. The museum of early industries which offers a glimpse of the industrial development of the Wupper valley, also belongs to the History Centre. North- Rhine/ Westphalia`s first and only children`s museum is a major attraction for all youngsters, with the elephant-drum, giraffe-guitar and other homemade instruments setting the tone. And while on the subjects of industry , quality products from Wuppertal have made the city famous on a worldwide scale. Machine tools, ball bearings, textile yarns, car accessories, cables, chemical products…The city`s central situation (Wuppertal is the country`s largest transport and freight- forwarding centre) has played a vital role in its economic growth. Wuppertal has 11 autobahn junctions, an Intercity and Intercity Express train services, a wide selection of hotels , one of the world` s largest exhibition centers of prefabricated houses while the airports of Düsseldorf and Cologne-Bonn are immediate vicinity. Wuppertal doesn`t belong to either the Ruhr coal and steel area or the Rhineland. It is a city in the country, the economic and cultural centre of the Graf von Berg region, a verdant district, full of self- assurance, in the heart of the Federal Republic. The best way for the visitor to get a first glimpse of this bustling city, which is still so very genial, is to take a ride on the suspension railway. This brick, fast-moving train is not just a city landmark and monument, but has shown itself to be the world`s safest transport system ever since it was inaugurated. Video cameras supervise the 70,000 passengers who use it every day as they get aboard the train and alight. The airborne journey from terminus to terminus takes less than 35 minutes. In between, along the 13.3 km route, there are 18 stations, from the art nouveau Station “Werther Brücke” to the super modern station Kluse, which only came into operation 1999. A hundred years of Operation has not passed without leaving a mark on the suspension railway. Consequently, the whole track structure is currently being replaced and expected to be completed by the beginning of 2003. An exciting venture… At the opening of the suspension railway in 1900, the Emperor Wilhelm II was one of the party. The carriage he traveled in, nostalgically known as the “Emperor`s carriage” (Kaiserwagen), is still in use and it just invites you to enjoy a leisurely coffee trip. It can be booked at any time as the lofty and enjoyable climax to a day`s outing by office parties or clubs. Catering of merrier liquid nature can be arranged, as can charming traveling companions, a role played by stewardesses in period costume, how can supply information about local history. You are cordially invited to get to know Wuppertal, a city full of special qualities, dynamic and at the same time relaxed.
