Wherever you go in Bremerhaven, you can feel the maritime flair of this young city founded in 1827 as a port for Bremen, 50 kilometers further down the Weser river. Today it still lives from the port business. Bremerhaven`s ports and the Container Terminal next to the water which is deep enough for seagoing vessels have successfully adapted to the demands of modern shipping. The Fishing Port has long been much more than just a place that handles fish, it is also a major centre of the food industry and known as Europe`s “deep freeze” because it is the continent`s largest production location for frozen foods. Yet Bremerhaven`s future lies not only in its ports, but also in science, the engine behind the necessary structural changes. Noteworthy facilities located in our city are the Institute for Polar and Marine Research (Alfred Wegener Institut für Polar- und Meeresforschung), the German Maritime Museum (Deutsches Schiffahrtsmuseum) and the Bremerhaven University of Applied Sciences (Hochschule Bremerhaven). Their excellent reputation became clear during the national competition for Germany`s “City of Science 2005”, which Bremerhaven won together with Bremen.
